US President Donald Trump has said that it is time for new leadership in Iran, as tensions continue between Washington and Tehran amid protests and political unrest in the Islamic Republic.
Trump’s remarks come at a time when nationwide protests in Iran — demanding the overthrow of the government — appear to be losing momentum. Iranian authorities, meanwhile, maintain that the situation is fully under control.
Over the past few days, the US president has issued several warnings of possible military intervention in Iran. Last Tuesday, he openly appealed to the Iranian public to continue protests and take control of institutions, claiming that international support was on the way.
However, a day later, Trump appeared to soften his stance, saying he had been informed that killings in Iran had stopped and that executions were no longer taking place.
Earlier today, Iran’s Supreme Leader blamed Trump for the violence and unrest in the country, holding the US president responsible for encouraging instability.
Responding to the Iranian leader’s statement, Trump said that the rulers in Tehran rely on coercion and violence to remain in power. He added that leadership should be based on respect rather than fear and death.
“Leadership means respect, not fear,” Trump said, adding that instead of killing thousands to maintain authority, governments should focus on running their countries effectively, as he claimed to do in the United States.
The US president further alleged that Iran’s poor leadership has turned the country into one of the worst places in the world to live, escalating the war of words between the two nations.
