UN Experts Condemn US Naval Blockade on Venezuela as Illegal Aggression

Four United Nations human rights experts have condemned the United States’ partial naval blockade of Venezuela, calling it an illegal use of armed force and urging the US Congress to intervene.

In a joint statement on Wednesday, the experts said, “There is no right to enforce unilateral sanctions through an armed blockade,” stressing that a blockade constitutes prohibited military aggression under the UN Charter. They added that the US blockade “gravely endangers the human right to life and other rights in Venezuela and the region.”

The experts highlighted that the blockade and related US military actions, including interception of oil tankers and air strikes on vessels allegedly transporting drugs, have resulted in over 100 deaths. They called for investigations into these killings and for those responsible to be held accountable.

US President Donald Trump has accused Venezuela of using its oil revenues to finance “narcoterrorism, human trafficking, murders and kidnappings,” claims which Caracas denies, stating that Washington seeks to overthrow President Nicolás Maduro to seize Venezuela’s oil reserves.

The experts urged countries to take action to end the blockade and prevent further killings, emphasizing that these measures are essential to uphold human rights and international law.

The joint statement was signed by Ben Saul (special rapporteur on protecting human rights while countering terrorism), George Katrougalos (expert on promoting a democratic and equitable international order), Surya Deva (development expert), and Gina Romero (special rapporteur on the right to freedom of peaceful assembly and association).
