The highly anticipated verdict in the 190 million pound reference against Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) founder Imran Khan and his wife Bushra Bibi will be delivered tomorrow, Friday, at 11:30 am, according to sources close to the Accountability Court. The case, which has been mired in delays, will finally see its conclusion after being postponed multiple times.
The Accountability Court, under Judge Nasir Javed Rana, will announce the reserved verdict in what has become one of the longest-running trials for the PTI leader. The court had initially set dates for the verdict in December 2024 and January 2025, but the decision was postponed each time.
This reference, which dates back to November 2023, is the only case against Imran Khan that has extended over a year of legal proceedings. The National Accountability Bureau (NAB) arrested Khan on November 13, 2023, and interrogated him for 17 days at Adiala Jail. The reference was filed by NAB on December 1, 2023, and Khan and his wife were subsequently questioned in the same facility.
The case revolves around allegations of corruption, including a secret agreement with a property tycoon, leading to the illegal transfer of 190 million pounds to Pakistan. The funds were reportedly linked to the acquisition of land for Al-Qadir University and the illegal acquisition of land in Islamabad. Imran Khan and Bushra Bibi are accused of using their positions to exert influence and facilitate these transactions, resulting in financial gains and corrupt practices.
More than 100 hearings have taken place, with 35 witnesses providing testimonies. The court has also dealt with numerous legal challenges, including requests from Khan's defense team to call judicial witnesses, which was eventually rejected. Over the course of the trial, the judges were changed multiple times, and the trial was followed by a six-member NAB prosecution team.
The case has brought significant political attention, as it implicates both Imran Khan and his wife in a series of alleged illegal dealings during Khan’s tenure as Prime Minister. The final decision will have far-reaching implications for the PTI leadership and the ongoing political landscape in Pakistan.
