Azad Jammu and Kashmir (AJK) President Barrister Sultan Mehmood Chaudhry passed away in Islamabad at the age of 71 after a prolonged illness, the Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) media office confirmed on Saturday.
Funeral prayers will be offered tomorrow in Chaudhry’s native village of Chichiyan, Mirpur, at 3 pm.
Chaudhry was a veteran politician, having been elected AJK Prime Minister in 1996 and President in 2021. Over his career, he was elected nine times as a member of the AJK Assembly from Mirpur, reflecting his enduring popularity in the region.
His death comes just days before Kashmir Solidarity Day on February 5, an occasion when Pakistan reaffirms its support for the Kashmiri people’s struggle.
Condolences from Leaders
President Asif Ali Zardari expressed grief over Chaudhry’s passing, praying that he be granted “forgiveness and a high place in heaven” and praising his national and political services as “invaluable.”
Senate Chairman Yousaf Raza Gillani described Chaudhry as a “dignified and principled politician” who played a significant role in promoting the Kashmir issue internationally. He extended condolences to the family, stating that Chaudhry’s political struggle would serve as a “beacon for future generations.”
National Assembly Speaker Ayaz Sadiq also paid tribute, highlighting Chaudhry’s “distinguished political and social services” and his invaluable contributions to highlighting Kashmir at international forums. He said Chaudhry’s advocacy for the legitimate rights of the Kashmiri people would always be remembered.
Sultan Mehmood Chaudhry’s death marks the loss of a key figure in Azad Jammu and Kashmir politics, remembered for his lifelong dedication to public service and the Kashmir cause.
