POLITICS & POLICY MAKING
Tensions escalated between Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) and the government over the medical care of party leader Imran Khan, with PTI alleging that he was denied access to his personal physician following a recent eye procedure.
State Minister for Interior Tallal Chaudhry, speaking on Geo News’ ‘Naya Pakistan,’ defended the government’s handling of the situation. He stated that Khan was taken to the nearest well-equipped hospital for examination, and his treatment followed standard operating procedures (SOPs). “There is nothing secret about it. He is absolutely healthy,” Chaudhry said, emphasizing that not every prisoner receives the same level of medical attention as Khan, who is considered privileged.
Chaudhry criticized PTI for staging sit-ins outside Adiala Jail and the Supreme Court, saying, “You cannot get a meeting by dictating. They do not even consider the law and order situation in that area.”
In response, PTI representatives, including Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Chief Minister Adviser Shafiullah Jan, stressed that the party’s priority was Khan’s health. They reiterated their request for Khan to meet his personal physician to ensure specialized care, particularly from a retinal specialist. Jan said, “He was taken to PIMS, but his family wasn’t informed. We cannot compromise on his health; it is the most important thing for us.”
Dr. Aasim Yusuf, Khan’s longtime personal physician and Chief Medical Officer at Shaukat Khanum Memorial Hospital, confirmed in a video statement that he had been denied permission to examine Khan at Adiala Jail. He emphasized that Khan’s condition requires evaluation by an ophthalmologist with retinal expertise, and possibly a general physician to rule out underlying medical issues.
Dr. Yusuf added that he is ready to visit again whenever access is granted. “We have every confidence in the abilities of the hospital physicians, but this is a serious condition that requires expert care,” he said.
The standoff highlights the ongoing tensions between PTI and the government, as concerns over the health of the incarcerated PTI leader continue to dominate political discourse.
