Army Chief Gen Asim Munir Vows to Defeat Terrorist Nexus During Visit to Khyber Pakhtunkhwa

Chief of Army Staff (COAS) General Asim Munir reiterated the Pakistan Army’s unwavering resolve to defeat hostile terrorist networks and eliminate illegal activities during a visit to Orakzai district in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. The visit aimed to assess the security situation and meet with troops who recently participated in counter-terrorism operations in the Tirah Valley and surrounding areas.

According to a statement from the Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR), Gen Munir was briefed on the current security landscape, ongoing intelligence-based counter-terrorism efforts, and the multi-pronged measures being implemented to maintain stability in the merged districts. The COAS expressed his appreciation for the high morale and readiness of the troops to address all types of threats effectively.

Gen Munir paid tribute to the martyrs of the army and law enforcement agencies (LEAs), emphasizing that the hard-earned peace achieved through significant national sacrifice would be upheld at all costs. “The sacrifice of our martyrs strengthens our resolve to fight with utmost dedication and spirit of sacrifice,” he said.

The army chief also commended the contributions of the police and LEAs in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, affirming that the Pakistan Army would continue to support these forces in the newly merged districts. He highlighted the importance of further capacity building for LEAs and appreciated the support from local communities in sustaining peace in the region.

The visit comes amid a rise in terror activities across Pakistan, particularly in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and Balochistan, following the end of a ceasefire between the government and the banned Tehreek-i-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) in November 2022. According to a recent annual security report by the Centre for Research and Security Studies, Pakistan experienced 1,524 violence-related fatalities and 1,463 injuries from 789 terror attacks and counter-terror operations in 2023, marking a record six-year high. Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and Balochistan were the primary hotspots, accounting for over 90 percent of fatalities and 84 percent of attacks.

In recent operations, security forces in the Tirah Valley killed at least 25 militants and suffered the loss of four soldiers. These operations, based on robust intelligence, dealt significant blows to the TTP and its affiliates, including the death of a key militant leader, Abuzar alias Saddam. The ISPR reported that 11 militants were injured in these operations.

Despite the challenges, Gen Munir's visit and the ongoing counter-terrorism efforts underscore the Pakistan Army’s commitment to securing the region and combating terrorism with determination and resilience.
