Pakistan Army Initiates Court-Martial Against Lt Gen (Retd) Faiz Hameed Following Misconduct Allegations

The Pakistan Army has commenced court-martial proceedings against former spymaster Lt Gen (Retd) Faiz Hameed after a detailed investigation uncovered violations of the Army Act, the Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR) spokesperson announced on Thursday.

In a press briefing held in Rawalpindi, ISPR Director General (DG) Lieutenant General Ahmed Sharif Chaudhry emphasized that the court-martial was based on "concrete evidence" following a thorough probe. He further reiterated that the Pakistan Army holds no political agenda and operates under a robust system of self-accountability.

The decision to court-martial Gen Hameed came after allegations of misconduct were brought forward by the owner of a private housing society. This marks a significant development, challenging the long-standing perception that military intelligence chiefs in Pakistan are untouchable figures.

“The Pakistan Army believes in the process of self-accountability, which is comprehensive, transparent, and time-tested,” stated DG Chaudhry, stressing that actions taken by the military are rooted in established laws and conducted without discrimination.

DG ISPR also highlighted that Gen Hameed’s case was referred to the military by the Ministry of Defence, leading to a high-level inquiry. The investigation found that Gen Hameed had crossed legal boundaries, allegedly in connection with specific political interests. "The accusation is that the retired officer worked for personal interest on the instructions of political elements," DG Chaudhry said.

He added that all officers subject to legal action within the army are entitled to the full rights of defense, including the appointment of a legal representative and the right to appeal.

This development comes amidst rising tensions in Balochistan, where a series of deadly attacks on August 26 claimed the lives of 14 security personnel. The attacks were described by the ISPR as being carried out under the directives of both internal and external enemies aiming to disrupt the region’s development. In response, security forces eliminated 21 terrorists and continue to intensify counterterrorism operations.
