r Imran Khan’s sister, Aleema Khan, after she failed to appear in a case related to the party’s November 26 protest despite multiple arrest warrants.
ATC Judge Amjad Ali Shah issued the directives during a hearing in which he expressed frustration over Aleema’s repeated absences, remarking that she “is present everywhere but doesn’t appear before the court.”
The judge instructed the National Database and Registration Authority (NADRA) director general and the Director General of Passports to immediately block Aleema’s CNIC and passport. The court further directed the State Bank of Pakistan to freeze all her bank accounts and ordered the forfeiture of her guarantor’s properties to the state.
The hearing was adjourned until October 27.
Background of the Case
The case stems from the November 26, 2023, protest organized by PTI, in which over 10,000 supporters entered Islamabad despite a ban on public gatherings, clashing with around 20,000 security personnel deployed to block them. The confrontation, which took place in the capital’s Red Zone, ended with the PTI leadership abruptly calling off its planned sit-in.
Following the protest, police registered multiple cases against PTI leaders under various sections of the Pakistan Penal Code and Section 7 of the Anti-Terrorism Act. Aleema Khan, along with 10 others, was named in a case filed at the Sadiqabad police station.
The Rawalpindi ATC has since issued at least four arrest warrants for Aleema over her continued non-compliance with court summons.
Repeated Arrest Warrants and Court Observations
The most recent non-bailable arrest warrant was issued on October 22, following which Punjab Sub-Divisional Police Officer Azhar Shah executed the warrant and obtained Aleema’s signature before the Islamabad High Court. Despite this, she failed to appear before the ATC the next day.
The court had previously expressed displeasure at law enforcement officials for submitting “fabricated and misleading” reports claiming that Aleema had gone into hiding, even as she was seen addressing the media outside Adiala Jail.
Non-bailable arrest warrants were earlier issued on October 14 and October 20, while a bailable warrant had been issued on October 8, when Aleema was scheduled to be indicted but failed to attend the proceedings.
The ATC’s latest decision to block her identification documents and freeze her assets marks an escalation in the court’s attempts to enforce her appearance.
