Government Bans TLP Under ATA; Punjab Governor Calls PPP–PML-N Alliance a ‘Compulsion’

The Ministry of Interior has issued a formal notification banning Tehreek-e-Labbaik Pakistan (TLP) after the federal cabinet’s approval of the move on Thursday. The religious-political party has now been declared a proscribed organization under the Anti-Terrorism Act, 1997.

According to the notification, the federal government has “solid reasons” to believe that TLP is involved in terrorist activities. The group has been added to the First Schedule of banned organizations under the law. Copies of the notification have been sent to all provinces, relevant institutions, the TLP leadership, and the Election Commission of Pakistan.

⚖️ Legal Process Underway

Sources confirm that the Law Ministry has initiated the legal process to formalize the ban. After consultations with the Law Ministry and the Attorney General, the federal government is expected to file a reference in the Supreme Court under clauses 2 and 3 of Article 17 of the Constitution.

The Supreme Court will then review the government’s evidence—including records of TLP’s alleged involvement in terrorism—before issuing a final decision on the party’s status.

Under Article 17(2), any political party acting against the security, unity, or integrity of Pakistan may be banned. However, the ban only becomes legally binding once upheld by the Supreme Court, which must receive the government’s reference within 15 days of the executive decision.

The move follows an earlier decision by the Punjab cabinet, which had already approved the proposal to ban the TLP and forwarded it to the federal government for implementation.

🗣PPP–PML-N Alliance ‘a Compulsion,’ Says Punjab Governor

Meanwhile, Punjab Governor Sardar Saleem Haider described his party’s alliance with the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) as one born of necessity rather than affection.

Speaking at a joint press conference in Peshawar with Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Governor Faisal Karim Kundi, Governor Haider said that the PPP–PML-N alliance was a “compulsion for Pakistan’s stability”.

“This is not a relationship of love but of compulsion. Pakistan’s betterment is our priority, and we are ready to bear losses for the country’s sake,”
said the Punjab Governor.

He advised the KP government to adopt a political approach to secure provincial rights and to maintain constructive ties with Prime Minister Shahbaz Sharif.

Haider added that he maintains cordial relations with the Punjab government, though Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz had expressed concerns over certain issues. He confirmed that the Prime Minister has assured to resolve the PPP’s reservations.

Governor Faisal Karim Kundi reiterated that the KP Governor House will never stand in the way of peace and development, noting that past bitterness between provinces must not be repeated.
