China Confirms Role in Pakistan-India Mediation, India Prefers Bilateral Talks

China has officially confirmed for the first time that it attempted to mediate in the recent Pakistan-India tensions, while India has reiterated that any conflict between the two countries should be resolved bilaterally without third-party involvement.

Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi stated in Beijing that the tensions between India and Pakistan earlier this year were among several complex regional and global issues where China has undertaken mediation efforts. He highlighted China’s role not only in the Pakistan-India conflict but also in northern Myanmar, the Iranian nuclear issue, Palestinian-Israeli tensions, and the recent Cambodia-Thailand dispute.

Wang Yi’s statement, widely reported by Indian media and international outlets, has sparked renewed discussion in diplomatic circles. Analysts note the significance of China publicly acknowledging its mediation efforts, particularly as India has consistently rejected third-party involvement in Indo-Pakistan matters.

India’s Ministry of External Affairs emphasized that the May 7–10, 2025, tensions were resolved through a direct phone call between the Directors General of Military Operations (DGMOs) of both countries. New Delhi maintains that all disputes with Pakistan are strictly bilateral and there is no role for external intervention.

Some diplomatic observers interpret China’s statement as part of Beijing’s broader effort to project itself as a responsible global power, actively contributing to conflict resolution in the region.

While Pakistan has not issued a detailed response to the latest statement, Islamabad has historically welcomed mediation efforts, keeping the issue at the center of regional and international diplomatic discussions.
