COAS Bids Farewell to Outgoing CJCSC Gen Sahir Shamshad Mirza

Outgoing Chairman Joint Chiefs of Staff Committee (CJCSC) General Sahir Shamshad Mirza paid a farewell visit to Chief of the Army Staff (COAS) Field Marshal Asim Munir at General Headquarters (GHQ) in Rawalpindi, the military’s media wing announced on Tuesday.

According to the Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR), the meeting underscored General Mirza’s extensive contributions to Pakistan’s defence structure and strategic landscape. The COAS praised the outgoing CJCSC for his “exemplary leadership, strategic foresight, and dedicated service to the Pakistan Armed Forces.”

ISPR added that Field Marshal Munir highlighted General Mirza’s pivotal role in enhancing tri-services synergy, improving joint operational preparedness, and advancing Pakistan's long-term national security objectives at the strategic level. He also acknowledged Mirza’s work in military diplomacy and his efforts to strengthen Pakistan’s partnerships with friendly states.

General Mirza expressed gratitude to the COAS and all ranks of the armed forces for their support throughout his career. Upon arrival at GHQ, he laid a floral wreath at Yadgar-e-Shuhada and received a guard of honour by a contingent of the Pakistan Army.

CJCSC Post Abolished After Constitutional Amendments

The farewell comes at a significant moment in Pakistan’s military history. Earlier this month, sweeping changes were introduced through an amendment to Article 243 of the Constitution, followed by adjustments to laws governing the Army, Air Force, and Navy.

These reforms abolished the office of the Chairman Joint Chiefs of Staff Committee, a position established nearly five decades ago to maintain balance and coordination among the three services, especially during wartime.

The dissolution of the post will take effect on November 27, marking the end of joint-service representation at the highest decision-making level within Pakistan’s armed forces — at least under the current framework.

General Mirza’s departure thus not only closes a personal chapter but symbolises the conclusion of an era in Pakistan’s military organisational structure.
