POLITICS & POLICY MAKING
The Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) has announced that local government elections will be held in the federal capital, Islamabad, ending a prolonged delay that has left the city without elected local representatives since February 2021.
According to the ECP’s reserved decision, the commission has the authority to appoint Returning Officers (ROs), Deputy Returning Officers (DROs), and Assistant Returning Officers (AROs) from among government officials, the judiciary, or other government agencies to oversee the elections.
The term of Islamabad’s local government ended on February 14, 2021. As per the law, local elections are required to be conducted within 120 days of the completion of the term. However, Islamabad has not seen local elections for nearly four years, leaving administrative responsibilities largely in the hands of appointed officials.
The ECP’s decision marks a significant step toward restoring democratic governance at the grassroots level in the federal capital, allowing citizens to elect representatives for municipal administration and local development.
