Five terrorists were killed and three officers injured during a fierce gun battle in the Zargari Shinawari area of Hangu district, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP), on Saturday, police officials confirmed.
The operation was carried out jointly by security forces and KP police following intelligence reports of terrorist activity in the region. According to Inspector General of Police Zulfiqar Hameed, the encounter resulted in heavy exchange of fire between the militants and law enforcement personnel.
"Security forces fought bravely and eliminated five terrorists during the clash," the official police statement said. However, Hangu District Police Officer (DPO) Khalid Khan, Doaba Station House Officer (SHO), and a member of the security forces sustained injuries in the operation.
DPO Khalid was reported to have been hit by three bullets but is in stable condition. Arrangements were being made to airlift him from Hangu Hospital to Peshawar for advanced treatment, confirmed Imran Khan, personal secretary to IGP Hameed.
The police chief also visited the injured officers to inquire about their well-being, reaffirming the force’s commitment to combating terrorism. “Law enforcement agencies are determined to continue their fight against terrorism,” the statement emphasized.
Pakistan has seen a significant increase in militant violence, especially in KP and Balochistan, following the Tehreek-i-Taliban Pakistan (TTP)’s decision to end its ceasefire with the government in late 2022. The country ranked second in the Global Terrorism Index 2025, with deaths from terror attacks rising by 45% over the past year to 1,081.
Recent weeks have seen a surge in successful counterterrorism efforts. On June 21, KP police thwarted a terrorist attack in Dera Ismail Khan, killing one militant and injuring two. In May, multiple policemen lost their lives in suicide and armed attacks in Peshawar and Bannu. Earlier this week, three “wanted terrorists” were killed during a joint operation in Bannu district, followed by another major strike on July 5 against the TTP's Tipu Gul group.
As the region grapples with ongoing threats, authorities remain vigilant and resolute in their mission to root out militancy and restore peace in the affected areas.
