Govt to Introduce Right-to-Appeal Bill for Military Court Decisions

The government has announced plans to introduce legislation granting citizens the right to appeal against decisions of military courts.

The announcement was made during a session of the National Assembly, following remarks by opposition member Asad Qaiser, who highlighted that no formal legislation currently exists regarding the right to appeal in military courts.

Responding to the observation, Federal Law Minister Azam Nazir Tarar stated that the Law Ministry is preparing a bill to ensure this right, which will be presented before Parliament in the coming weeks.

The Law Minister emphasized that while the judiciary cannot directly legislate on this matter, it remains the prerogative of the elected representatives in Parliament to enact such laws. The proposed legislation is aimed at strengthening legal safeguards and providing an avenue for review of military court decisions.

This step follows ongoing debates on civil-military legal processes and marks a significant move towards ensuring judicial oversight and accountability in military justice.
