Sindh Chief Minister Murad Ali Shah on Wednesday reaffirmed that the provincial government would not tolerate any obstacle in the provision of free treatment for heart diseases at the National Institute of Cardiovascular Diseases (NICVD).
The assurance was given during the 84th Governing Body meeting of NICVD, which was chaired by the chief minister. The meeting was informed that the institute is currently facing a financial loss of Rs4.6 billion.
According to an official spokesperson, Executive Director NICVD Professor Tahir Saghir briefed the governing body on the hospital’s financial and administrative situation. In response, the chief minister decided to restore the legal status of the National Institute of Cardiology, while several key decisions were taken to safeguard the future of the hospital and ensure the uninterrupted continuation of its services.
“No hurdle will be allowed in the free treatment of heart diseases,” Murad Ali Shah said, stressing the government’s commitment to public healthcare.
To address NICVD’s operational challenges, the chief minister approved a grant-in-aid of Rs15.5 billion for the hospital’s operational expenses. He also granted approval for the immediate appointment of a Chief Operating Officer (COO) and Chief Financial Officer (CFO) to strengthen the institute’s administrative and financial management.
The chief minister further noted that NICVD would require an additional grant of Rs3.5 billion in the fiscal year 2025–26. He said the provincial government would remove legal ambiguities to ensure the institution could continue serving patients without disruption.
NICVD is one of the largest cardiac care networks in Pakistan, providing free-of-cost treatment to thousands of patients daily, and plays a critical role in the country’s public healthcare system.
