HRCP Warns 27th Amendment Threatens Judicial Independence and Civil Liberties

The Human Rights Commission of Pakistan (HRCP) has raised serious concerns over the potential erosion of judicial independence, civil liberties, and public safety in the country following the passage of the 27th Constitutional Amendment.

According to the HRCP, the amendment grants the government increased powers, undermining the system of checks and balances essential to a functioning democracy. The commission specifically highlighted that lifelong immunity for public office holders further concentrates authority, weakening accountability mechanisms.

The HRCP emphasized the importance of robust and elected local governments to maintain democratic governance and ensure that power is distributed responsibly.

The rights body also called for urgent reforms to end enforced disappearances, the operation of detention centres without due process, and the misuse of Schedule 4, which they say has been applied in a manner inconsistent with the principles of justice.

The HRCP’s warning comes amid growing concerns over the balance of power between Pakistan’s executive and judiciary, as well as reports of increasing restrictions on civil liberties across the country.
