The Islamabad High Court (IHC) has reserved its verdict on a petition calling for early local government elections in the federal capital. The hearing was presided over by Justice Mohsin Akhtar Kayani, with the Election Commission’s DG Law, the Assistant Attorney General, and other relevant officials present.
During the proceedings, Justice Kayani observed that the administrative system in Islamabad has been crippled due to the prolonged delay in local elections. “No property tax can be levied, no work is being done properly, and court decisions are being continuously violated,” he remarked.
The Election Commission’s DG Law cited complications arising from recent amendments to the Local Government Act 2025, while the Assistant Attorney General argued that the delays were due to pending legislation and that it was Parliament’s responsibility to address these issues.
Justice Kayani responded, noting that “Parliament is currently busy interpreting the Constitution and any amendment is difficult. Not every wrongdoing can be defended. When wrong laws are made, they have to be brought back to zero later. It takes time to correct a law that has many mistakes.”
After hearing arguments from all parties, the court reserved its decision, leaving the timing of Islamabad’s local government elections pending.
The case highlights ongoing concerns over governance in the federal capital, where the absence of elected local bodies has impacted service delivery, tax collection, and overall administration.
