IHC Restores Bail of Journalist Sohrab Barkat in NCCIA Case

The Islamabad High Court (IHC) on Monday restored the bail of journalist Sohrab Barkat in the final remaining case registered against him by the National Cyber Crime Investigation Agency (NCCIA).

Justice Arbab Muhammad Tahir heard the petition filed by Barkat challenging a trial court decision that had revoked his post-arrest bail.

After hearing arguments from both sides, the high court set aside the impugned order and directed authorities to release the journalist forthwith, provided he is not required in any other case.

Representing Barkat, Saad Rasool argued that the trial court had erred in cancelling the bail despite his client’s compliance with all previously imposed conditions. He maintained that there had been no violation that warranted revocation of the relief granted earlier.

In its ruling, the IHC observed that the trial court’s order could not be sustained in law and restored the bail, effectively clearing the path for Barkat’s release.

The case against the journalist had been registered over allegations of spreading misinformation about state institutions during an interview he conducted.

The decision marks a significant development in the proceedings against Barkat, bringing relief after months of legal uncertainty and reinforcing the appellate court’s scrutiny over bail cancellations in cybercrime-related cases.
