Information Minister Tarar: Pakistan Emerges as Globally Relevant Post-May Conflict

Pakistan has become “extremely relevant” on the international stage, Information Minister Attaullah Tarar stated on Monday, citing the country’s response during the May military conflict with India as a turning point.

The May confrontation erupted after an attack on tourists in India-occupied Kashmir, which New Delhi linked to Pakistan without providing evidence. Islamabad denied any involvement and called for an impartial investigation. Following deadly air strikes by India in Punjab and Azad Kashmir, a four-day escalation ensued, culminating in a ceasefire brokered by the United States on May 10.

Speaking at a public function, Tarar emphasized Pakistan’s proactive diplomacy in the conflict’s aftermath. He praised Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif’s call for a fair investigation, which countered the narrative blaming Pakistan for terrorism. Tarar remarked, “You can’t be a victim and an aggressor at the same time — it’s an oxymoron. Pakistan is the biggest victim of terrorism and a shield against global threats.”

Strategic Diplomacy and Gen Z Impact

Tarar highlighted Pakistan’s strategic use of media and diplomacy to present its narrative globally. He acknowledged the role of social media and Gen Z in shaping public perception through memes and online campaigns, describing them as “digital natives” who effectively countered misinformation.

The minister also underscored coordination between civil authorities and military spokespersons, stating that this synergy was crucial in projecting Pakistan’s narrative internationally.

Global Engagement and Economic Recognition

Tarar noted Pakistan’s rising role in regional peace efforts, citing its involvement in Gaza ceasefire negotiations and hosting international summits like the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO). He also referenced strengthened ties with Saudi Arabia, including the Strategic Mutual Defence Agreement and the Economic Cooperation Framework.

Economically, Tarar pointed to improved macroeconomic indicators and global acknowledgment of Pakistan’s turnaround from previous defaults, calling it a shift “from isolation to relevance.”

Regional Security and International Relations

Tarar discussed ongoing concerns with Afghanistan, asserting Pakistan’s evidence of cross-border terrorism and emphasizing the country’s proactive diplomacy. He also highlighted strengthened relations with the United States and China, framing Pakistan’s foreign policy as balanced and forward-looking.

He concluded by stressing the cohesion between civil and military leadership, noting that internal stability enabled Pakistan to effectively advocate for its interests abroad, elevate its international standing, and create opportunities for economic growth.
