Mustafa Kamal Warns PPP: Discuss Local Government Bill or 18th Amendment at Risk

MQM-Pakistan (MQM-P) leader Mustafa Kamal on Monday urged the Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) to engage in discussions over a bill concerning the local government system, warning that failure to do so could undermine the 18th Amendment and impact Sindh’s provincial structure.

Speaking at a press conference in Karachi, Kamal stated that the local government amendment is slated to be presented in the coming months and is expected to be approved. He invited the PPP to participate in deliberations, emphasizing that just as the party takes credit for the 18th Amendment, it should also acknowledge the forthcoming local government amendment.

Kamal criticized the PPP for initially being unwilling to include the bill in the recently enacted 27th Amendment. He added that the federal government had assured that the bill would be treated as mandatory in the next constitutional amendment.

Highlighting the importance of local governance, Kamal remarked, “Karachi is a milk cow; if you do not feed it, how will it work? You take NFC awards but there is no PFC.”

He concluded by issuing a stern warning to the PPP, saying that ignoring the local government bill could put the 18th Amendment at risk and affect the status of Sindh as a province.

Kamal’s remarks underline MQM-P’s ongoing push for stronger local government systems and greater provincial autonomy, signaling potential political tensions if the PPP does not engage in the legislative process.
