Senator Sanaullah: 28th Amendment Imminent, Judges’ Political Protests “Inappropriate”

Senator Rana Sanaullah on Monday stated that the 28th Constitutional Amendment would be brought soon, emphasizing that judges who resigned over the 27th Amendment acted based on personal objectives rather than constitutional duty.

Talking to the media, Sanaullah said, “It is the right of Parliament to pass constitutional amendments. Judges have sworn to protect the Constitution and should not involve themselves in political protests.”

He added that if the judges truly opposed the 27th Amendment, they would have resigned immediately rather than politicizing the issue. “Those who have resigned have personal objectives. It is not appropriate for a judge to protest politically while holding office,” he said, suggesting that any resignation should clearly state personal political motives.

Sanaullah also commented on privileges following resignations, noting that the matter would be discussed by the Judicial Commission, and the government should refrain from unilateral decisions.

Highlighting upcoming legislative plans, the senator said the 28th Amendment would focus on public interest issues. Meanwhile, the Punjab government has announced plans to hold local government elections soon. The Local Government Act has been passed, and the delimitation of constituencies is currently underway.

The remarks underscore the government’s commitment to moving forward with constitutional reforms while stressing the separation of judicial duties from political activism.
