As the ongoing Middle East war enters its second week, Iran’s interim leader Masoud Pezeshkian reaffirmed that the country will never surrender to Israel or the United States.

In a speech broadcast on state television on Saturday, Pezeshkian warned that Iran’s enemies “must take their wish for the unconditional surrender of the Iranian people to their graves.”

The conflict erupted after Israel and the United States launched strikes against Iran on February 28, which reportedly killed the Islamic Republic’s Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei, triggering a regional escalation. Iran has responded with missile and drone attacks targeting Israeli and US interests in the Gulf and neighbouring areas.

Pezeshkian, one of three members of the interim leadership council now governing Iran, also addressed the regional impact of Iran’s counterstrikes. He apologised to neighbouring countries for any collateral damage, assuring that future attacks would only occur if aggression originated from those nations.

“I must apologise on my own behalf and on behalf of Iran to the neighbouring countries that were attacked by Iran,” Pezeshkian said. “The interim leadership council agreed yesterday that no more attacks will be made on neighbouring countries and no missiles will be fired unless an attack on Iran originates from those countries.”

The statement comes amid continued military operations in the region, as Iran responds to US and Israeli strikes. The announcement reflects Iran’s intent to focus its counterattacks on immediate adversaries while attempting to reassure neighbouring states.

International observers have warned that the conflict risks further destabilising the Gulf region, with potential impacts on global energy supplies and trade through strategic routes such as the Strait of Hormuz.

Iran’s declaration signals both defiance against its primary adversaries and a cautious approach to avoid widening the conflict beyond its borders.
