The Islamabad High Court Justice Committee ICT reviewed the progress of the Model Jail Islamabad, reporting that 85% of construction work has been completed. The committee has directed that the jail be fully completed by June 30, with phased transfer of prisoners beginning from July 1.
During the meeting, officials were instructed to finalize the deployment of prison staff and ensure that all operational arrangements are in place before the jail becomes functional. The committee also directed the Ministry of Interior and the Ministry of Finance to resolve pending issues, and the Secretary Finance will be invited to the next meeting for further discussions.
The meeting also addressed broader issues concerning prison reforms and crime management in the capital. The Chief Justice expressed concern over the rising crime rate in Islamabad and emphasized improvements in the criminal justice system, including:
- Mandatory forensic lab reports in rape cases
- Enhanced training for investigation officers
- Expedited disposal of cases by the district judiciary
Additionally, the committee reviewed the Safe City project and CCTV surveillance and issued directives to strengthen security in courts, judges’ residences, and judicial complexes. Recommendations included the installation of emergency exits, alarm systems, and improved efficiency of the prosecution department.
The committee emphasized that implementing an effective National Prison Reform Action Plan is essential to modernize the prison system and ensure public safety. With the Model Jail nearing completion, these reforms are expected to enhance security, efficiency, and transparency within Islamabad’s criminal justice infrastructure.
