Sindh High Court Orders NADRA to Review Family Records After Afghan Citizen Included

The Sindh High Court has ordered the National Database and Registration Authority (NADRA) to review the legal documents of an entire Pakistani family within 10 days after an Afghan citizen was allegedly included in their family tree.

The court’s ruling came in response to a petition challenging the inclusion of Afghan national Naqeebullah in the family of Muhammad Akram. NADRA had reportedly blocked the national identity cards of the applicant’s family after discovering the anomaly through biometric verification of the petitioner’s father.

During proceedings, the petitioner’s lawyer alleged that NADRA officials often accept bribes to unlawfully include Afghan citizens in the family trees of Pakistani citizens. According to the lawyer, there are roughly 4 million Afghan refugees in Pakistan, with around 2 million reportedly holding Pakistani identity cards, enabling them to travel internationally using Pakistani documentation.

The court expressed concern over the blocking of identity cards of Pakistani citizens and questioned NADRA officials about their actions. It emphasized that if any person unrelated to the family is included in the records, their name should be removed immediately.

NADRA has now been given 10 days to review all legal documents pertaining to the petitioner’s family to ensure accuracy and legality. The ruling underscores the importance of safeguarding the integrity of national identity records and preventing misuse of citizenship documents.
