Japanese Climber Found Deceased on Spantik Mountain, Search Continues for Second Climber

Japanese climber Ryuseki Hiraoka has been found deceased at an altitude of 6,200 meters. The search continues for his climbing partner, Atsushi Taguchi, who remains missing. Hiraoka and Taguchi began their expedition on June 3 with the goal of summiting the 7,027-meter peak without the assistance of porters. They were last seen on June 10, prompting concern among fellow climbers when they failed to meet as scheduled.

Local authorities, led by Shigar district's deputy commissioner Wali Ullah Falahi, are coordinating search efforts, which have been supported by Pakistan Army helicopters despite challenging weather conditions. Spantik Mountain, also known as the Golden Peak, is renowned for its accessibility compared to other peaks in the region but poses significant challenges due to its high altitude and rugged terrain.

The Gilgit-Baltistan region, where Spantik is located, attracts climbers from around the world during the summer climbing season. This incident underscores the risks inherent in high-altitude mountaineering, emphasizing the courage and determination required by climbers who venture into such formidable environments.
