Pakistan Observes 59th Defence Day, Commemorating the Heroes of the 1965 War

On Friday, Pakistan celebrated its 59th Defence Day to honor the sacrifices made by its soldiers during the 1965 war with India. A change of guards ceremony took place at major national landmarks, including the Quaid’s mausoleum in Karachi and Allama Iqbal’s mausoleum in Lahore.

According to Radio Pakistan, "It was on this day in 1965 that Indian forces crossed the international border in an attempt to attack Pakistan. However, the nation united to foil the enemy’s designs."

In a statement issued by the Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR), the armed forces proudly reflected on the victorious legacy of the 1965 war, describing it as a "paradigm of the nation’s indomitable will and unyielding spirit." The military’s media wing also paid homage to the martyrs and veterans of Pakistan’s various conflicts, especially those who sacrificed their lives in the fight against terrorism.

The ISPR added, “The Pakistan Armed Forces reaffirm their unwavering commitment to defend the country against all threats and challenges. We along with Law Enforcement Agencies stand ready to defend our homeland with unwavering dedication and unrelenting passion, upholding the spirit of September 1965.”

Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif also paid tribute to the martyrs and veterans, encouraging the nation to draw inspiration from their sacrifices to rebuild Pakistan. In his message, President Asif Ali Zardari emphasized the importance of national unity in defending the country’s sovereignty.

As the nation commemorates this day, it stands united in its resolve to defend the motherland, just as it did 59 years ago.
