The federal government on Monday declared a four-day public holiday from June 6 (Friday) to June 9 (Monday) on the joyous occasion of Eidul Azha 2025, according to an official notification issued by the Cabinet Division.
“The prime minister has been pleased to declare the 6th, 7th, 8th, and 9th (Friday to Monday) as public holidays on the occasion of Eidul Azha,” read the statement.
The announcement gives citizens an extended weekend to celebrate Eidul Azha, one of the most significant religious festivals in the Islamic calendar.
Earlier, the Central Ruet-i-Hilal Committee (RHC) confirmed that Eidul Azha will be observed on Saturday, June 7, following the non-sighting of the Zilhaj crescent last month. As a result, Zilhaj 1, 1446 AH began on Thursday, May 29.
The moon-sighting meeting was held on the rooftop of Islamabad’s Kohsar Block, the location of the Ministry of Religious Affairs. During a press conference, RHC Chairman Maulana Abdul Khabeer Azad announced that no credible testimonies of moon sighting had been received from any part of the country. He noted that while some areas had clear skies, most regions remained cloudy.
The session was attended by officials and experts from the Pakistan Meteorological Department, Suparco, and the Ministry of Science and Technology, including Dr Mohammad Hasan Ali, Shaukatullah Khan, and Zainul Abedin.
Eidul Azha, also known as the Festival of Sacrifice, is celebrated annually on the 10th of Zilhaj, marking the culmination of Haj, the fifth pillar of Islam. It commemorates the willingness of Prophet Ibrahim (AS) to sacrifice his son in obedience to Allah’s command.
Muslims across Pakistan and the world celebrate the occasion by offering animal sacrifices, distributing meat among family, friends, and the needy, and attending congregational Eid prayers.
The four-day holiday provides ample time for travel, family gatherings, and traditional celebrations.
