Pakistan’s civil and military leadership on Thursday highlighted Quaid-i-Azam Muhammad Ali Jinnah’s vision of a sovereign, democratic and inclusive nation as the country observed his 149th birth anniversary with nationwide commemorations.
According to state broadcaster Radio Pakistan, the day began with a 31-gun salute in Islamabad and 21-gun salutes in provincial capitals. Special prayers were offered in mosques after Fajr prayers for the Quaid and for the peace, prosperity and development of the country. A change of guard ceremony was also held at Mazar-i-Quaid in Karachi.
In his message, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif said the occasion provided an opportunity for collective reflection and renewal of commitment to Quaid-i-Azam’s guiding principles of democracy, constitutionalism, social justice, religious harmony and the rule of law.
“A visionary leader and a statesman of global stature, Quaid-i-Azam’s political wisdom, unwavering resolve and selfless struggle altered the course of history and made possible the creation of an independent homeland for the Muslims of the subcontinent,” the prime minister said. He added that the Quaid’s ideals of faith, unity and discipline remain the foundation of Pakistan’s national strength and a guiding light for future generations.
President Asif Ali Zardari also paid tribute to the founder of the nation, stressing the enduring relevance of Quaid-i-Azam’s leadership. He urged the nation, especially the youth, to uphold the Quaid’s principles of democracy, justice and equality in addressing contemporary challenges.
“The Quaid exemplified conviction, perseverance and hard work, laying the foundation of Pakistan. His principles must continue to guide our institutions and decision-making,” the president said. He also announced that the government will declare 2026 as the “Year of Quaid-i-Azam” to mark his 150th birth anniversary.
Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar, in his message, noted that Quaid-i-Azam’s birth anniversary coincided with Christmas, calling it a reflection of Pakistan’s inclusive vision and respect for religious diversity. He said the Quaid envisioned Pakistan as a democratic state guaranteeing equality and fundamental rights for all citizens.
The country’s military leadership also paid rich tribute to Quaid-i-Azam. According to the Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR), Chief of Defence Forces and Army Chief Field Marshal Asim Munir, along with the chiefs of the navy and air force, reaffirmed their commitment to Quaid-i-Azam’s vision of a strong, sovereign, democratic and prosperous Pakistan.
The statement added that the armed forces remain steadfast in safeguarding Pakistan’s sovereignty and territorial integrity and in contributing to national stability, peace and development in line with the ideals of the nation’s founder.
