The Judicial Commission of Pakistan (JCP) has approved the permanent appointment of three additional judges of the Islamabad High Court (IHC) during a meeting chaired by Chief Justice of Pakistan Justice Yahya Afridi.
According to an official announcement, the meeting reviewed several important judicial matters, including the permanent appointments of additional judges in the Islamabad and Balochistan High Courts, as well as the formulation of rules for judicial appointments in the Federal Constitutional Court (FCC).
The commission approved the permanent appointment of Justice Muhammad Azam Khan, Justice Muhammad Asif, and Justice Inam Amin Minhas as judges of the Islamabad High Court.
During the meeting, the commission also considered the permanent appointment of additional judges of the Balochistan High Court (BHC). The appointment of Justice Najamuddin Mengal was confirmed, while the nomination of Justice Ayub Khan was rejected by a majority vote.
In addition, the Judicial Commission formed a committee to review and propose criteria for the nomination of judges to constitutional benches. The committee will develop recommendations covering appointment procedures, interview mechanisms, eligibility criteria, and possible amendments to existing rules.
The meeting further decided to examine amendments to the Judicial Commission Rules 2024, with an emphasis on strengthening the constitutional framework to ensure transparent, merit-based, and effective judicial appointments.
