Khawaja Asif Warns Against Judges Seeking Fame, Calls for Greater Accountability

Defense Minister Khawaja Asif has criticized judges who make decisions for public recognition rather than justice, saying such actions tarnish the judiciary’s reputation and negatively impact the public.

In a statement on social media platform X, Asif said, “Judges who make decisions only for public fame should resign from the courts and enter politics.” He stressed that ignoring previous court rulings solely to gain public attention burdens the judicial system and undermines its credibility.

Asif called for the implementation of a system to monitor and penalize judges who misuse the law for personal gain. He particularly highlighted concerns over cases where stay orders are issued for years and later dismissed, risking billions of rupees in losses to the public exchequer.

He further emphasized the traditional role of judges, stating, “The job of judges is to listen more, speak less, and make decisions with the help of lawyers. This method has been successful in the legal system for centuries. If judges work against established principles, how can any different result be expected?”

Khawaja Asif also underlined the importance of careful judicial appointments. “Utmost care is needed in appointing judges. Their real aim should be to provide justice to the common man, and appointments must reflect this priority,” he added.

His remarks come amid ongoing debates about judicial independence, transparency, and accountability in Pakistan’s legal system.
