POLITICS & POLICY MAKING
Chief Minister of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP) Muhammad Sohail Khan Afridi formally inaugurated the 40.8 MW Koto Hydropower Project in the Lower Dir area, marking a significant step toward clean energy generation in the province.
Speaking at the ceremony, CM Afridi said the project will generate 40.8 MW of environmentally friendly electricity, which has already begun supplying power to the National Grid on a commercial basis. “This project will produce millions of units of pollution-free electricity annually, providing affordable and clean energy to thousands of homes,” he stated.
The Chief Minister highlighted the project’s economic benefits, noting that it will create employment opportunities at the local level and contribute to industrial revival and economic strengthening. “An annual income of Rs 2.4 billion is expected from the project, which will help improve the economic condition of the province,” Afridi added.
CM Afridi emphasized KP’s significant potential for cheap electricity generation and expressed pride in completing projects initiated by the province’s founders. He also voiced concerns over administrative hurdles, noting the lack of NOCs for development projects from May to November, and criticized the impact of terrorism on the province’s economy.
“The economy of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa is being affected by terrorist incidents, and civilian casualties in counter-terrorism operations are rising,” he said. Afridi also highlighted that if the federal government clears the province’s three trillion rupees in arrears, rapid development could follow.
The Koto Hydropower Project is expected to play a key role in providing sustainable energy, supporting economic growth, and improving living standards in the region.
