The National Assembly passed an amendment bill on Tuesday, increasing the salaries and allowances of Members of Parliament (MNAs and Senators) to PKR 519,000 per month. The bill, presented by Romina Khurshid Alam, was passed by a majority vote.
Under the amendment, parliamentary salaries are now on par with those of federal secretaries. The bill also includes revisions to allowances and other financial perks.
Speaker Ayaz Sadiq’s Remarks
Speaker Ayaz Sadiq, while addressing the assembly, stated, “You call the parliament fake and are not serious about yourself. If any member does not want the additional salary, they should write it down.”
He further emphasized the option for dissenting members to inform the Speaker’s Office if they wish to forego the increase.
Demand for Higher Salaries Rejected
Despite demands from parliamentarians, including members of PPP, PML-N, and PTI, for a monthly salary of PKR 1 million, Speaker Ayaz Sadiq rejected the proposal, settling on the PKR 519,000 figure.
Previous Salary Structure
Prior to the amendment, MNAs and Senators were receiving PKR 218,000 per month. The significant salary increase has sparked debate about financial priorities and economic challenges faced by the nation.
Public and Political Reactions
Law Minister Azam Nazir Tarar echoed the Speaker’s sentiment, suggesting that members unwilling to accept the hike could decline it formally.
While the bill received widespread support in the assembly, the salary increase comes amidst concerns over inflation and financial instability in the country, potentially drawing criticism from the public.
