PML-N Senator Irfan Siddiqui Confirms Postponement of Constitutional Amendments

PML-N Senator Irfan Siddiqui has confirmed that the proposed constitutional amendments have been postponed. Speaking to the media outside the Parliament House, Siddiqui indicated that it may take up to a week to ten days for the amendments to be finalized and presented. He assured that the delay is not a cause for major concern, stating, “Even if the amendment does not come immediately, there will be no doomsday.”

Siddiqui explained that while there is no significant obstacle preventing the amendments, some points in the draft remain contentious. He noted that Maulana Fazlur Rehman had requested additional time to address these issues and was generally satisfied with many aspects of the proposed changes. Siddiqui emphasized that disagreements over certain points are a normal part of the legislative process and that every party has the right to voice its concerns.

He further clarified that drafts of constitutional amendments are not usually made public before being presented in Parliament. Instead, they are first introduced to the House, where they are subject to debate and require the necessary majority for approval. “Our numbers are full,” Siddiqui stated confidently, indicating that the ruling party is prepared to proceed with the amendments once the draft is finalized.

Siddiqui also touched on the broader political context, mentioning that the amendments will be discussed in the new session of the National Assembly. He highlighted that the PTI members’ lack of authority to grant bail or influence proceedings in Adiala Jail does not affect the legislative process. “Even if PTI members agree on the amendments, if their founder does not, the matter will remain unresolved. We understand the PTI’s position,” Siddiqui added.

The postponement reflects ongoing negotiations and the complexity of reaching a consensus on constitutional changes. As the legislative process continues, the focus will be on resolving outstanding issues and moving forward with the amendments in the upcoming parliamentary session.
