Security forces eliminated four Tehreek-i-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) terrorists, including two ringleaders, during an intelligence-based operation (IBO) in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa’s Khyber district on Saturday.
The operation was conducted in the Bagh area of the district, according to a statement from the Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR), the military’s media wing. The statement revealed that two other terrorists were injured during the encounter.
The ISPR identified the killed ringleaders as Aziz ur Rehman, also known as Qari Ismail, and Mukhlis. Both were involved in multiple terrorist activities targeting security forces and innocent civilians in the area. Weapons and ammunition were recovered from the scene.
“The security forces of Pakistan are determined to wipe out the menace of terrorism from the country,” the ISPR stated, adding that a sanitization operation is ongoing to eliminate any remaining threats in the area.
Recent Operations Against Terrorism
This is the second major operation in the Khyber district in recent weeks. On January 17, security forces conducted an IBO in the Tirah area, resulting in the deaths of five terrorists, including another TTP ringleader, Abidullah, alias Turab.
The surge in counterterrorism efforts comes amidst an uptick in terror incidents in Pakistan, particularly in KP and Balochistan.
Escalating Terrorism in KP and Balochistan
The banned TTP has ramped up its activities since it unilaterally ended a fragile ceasefire agreement with the government in 2022. This resurgence of terror attacks has brought Pakistan’s security situation to levels reminiscent of 2014.
A report by the Islamabad-based think tank Pak Institute for Peace Studies (PIPS), released earlier this month, highlighted the alarming trend. According to the report, 95% of all terrorist attacks in 2024 occurred in KP and Balochistan.
KP recorded the highest number of incidents with 295 attacks, while Balochistan experienced a 119% increase in attacks, primarily attributed to Baloch insurgent groups such as the Balochistan Liberation Army (BLA) and Balochistan Liberation Front (BLF), which accounted for 171 incidents.
Commitment to Eradicating Terrorism
Despite the challenges, security forces continue to make significant strides in curbing terrorist activities. The ISPR reaffirmed Pakistan’s commitment to eradicating terrorism, emphasizing that operations like these demonstrate the resolve to ensure peace and stability in the region.
As the fight against terrorism intensifies, authorities have called for greater vigilance and cooperation from local communities to combat the evolving threat landscape effectively.
