POLITICS & POLICY MAKING
The Senate of Pakistan has approved a bill to amend the Pakistan Penal Code (PPC), introducing a new Section 297A aimed at preventing witchcraft in the country.
Under the amendment, anyone found practicing or promoting witchcraft could face 6 months to 7 years in prison, in addition to a fine of up to Rs 1 million. The legislation seeks to curb the social and economic harms caused by fraudulent practices associated with witchcraft.
Separately, the Senate also passed a bill concerning the federal curriculum and textbooks, aimed at standardizing education nationwide. The bill was presented by Senator Ani Marri.
The twin approvals mark the Senate’s focus on both social reform and educational policy, reflecting ongoing efforts to strengthen legal protections and improve the national education framework.
