Shah Mahmood Qureshi Calls India's Suspension of Indus Waters Treaty Illegal

Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) Vice Chairman and former Foreign Minister Shah Mahmood Qureshi has strongly condemned India’s decision to suspend the Indus Waters Treaty between the two countries, calling it illegal.

In a letter sent to journalists from Kot Lakhpat Jail, Lahore, Shah Mahmood Qureshi wrote that India’s actions constitute a clear violation of international law, as well as a breach of both the spirit and letter of the Simla Agreement. He expressed that India’s decision to suspend the treaty undermines regional peace and security.

Violation of International Law

Qureshi argued that India’s suspension of the Indus Waters Treaty violates not only bilateral agreements but also Security Council resolutions, pointing out that India’s disregard for these agreements further escalates tensions in the region. He emphasized that India’s actions jeopardize peace and stability in South Asia, particularly in light of both Pakistan and India being nuclear powers.

Pakistan's Offer for Transparent Investigation Rejected

In his letter, Qureshi further criticized India’s rejection of Pakistan’s offer for a transparent and impartial international investigation into the matter. He described this rejection as an unspoken admission that the issue might be based on a false flag operation.

A Call for Peace

Qureshi concluded his statement by warning that both Pakistan and India possess nuclear capabilities and that any conflict between the two nations would result in mutual destruction, likening it to “mutual suicide”. He stressed the need for peaceful dialogue and negotiations to resolve the ongoing tensions between the neighboring countries.
