Sindh CM Murad Ali Shah Vows Action Against Highway Sit-ins Following Karachi Protest

Sindh Chief Minister Murad Ali Shah on Monday reacted strongly to Jamaat-e-Islami’s protest in Karachi, warning that the provincial government will take strict action against sit-ins and blockades on major city highways.

Speaking to media representatives, Murad Ali Shah criticised the use of the recent Gul Plaza tragedy for political purposes. “It is surprising that the Gul Plaza tragedy is being publicized in this manner. Our objection is against those using this tragedy for political gain. The government stands with the families of the victims,” he said.

The chief minister highlighted that the Sindh government had provided Rs 10 million in assistance per victim’s family. “We visited 26 houses and handed over checks, but we did not take the media with us,” he added.

Addressing the Jamaat-e-Islami sit-in led by Hafiz Naeem-ur-Rehman, Murad Ali Shah stated that those opposing the government came to power through the votes of the people. “The people have trusted the Pakistan Peoples Party. I ask Hafiz Naeem to either attend the provincial assembly or vacate his seat,” he said.

The chief minister further condemned the disruption caused by the protest, noting that Shar-e-Faisal was blocked for three to four hours, inconveniencing citizens. “This should not have happened. Now we will take strict action against sit-ins and protests on major highways,” he warned.

He emphasised that Hafiz Naeem, as a Sindh Assembly member, should prioritise serving the people of his constituency. “If he cannot do that, he should give up his seat so that the people of his constituency are not deprived of representation,” Murad Ali Shah added.
