Syed Zain Shah, leader of the Save the River Committee, has pledged to continue the movement against the controversial canal and corporate farming projects in Sindh, calling for an immediate halt to these initiatives. Shah made these remarks during an address at a function organized by the Hyderabad District Bar Association.
In his speech, Shah emphasized the launch of a communication and awareness campaign to educate the people about the negative impact of the canal projects and corporate farming. He made it clear that the Save the River Committee will not back down until the projects are ended. "The people of Sindh will not be deceived anymore. The referendum of the people has been passed. You will have to end the canals, and the lands given to companies under corporate farming must be reclaimed," he stated.
Shah also stressed that the committee intends to end the corporate farming project through peaceful means, encouraging patience and perseverance. "If the government is serious about this issue, it should take steps through the tax committee. You will see the results in the next two months," he asserted. Shah further demanded transparency, calling for the disclosure of the figures related to the lands given to corporate farming companies and the return of those lands to the people.
Addressing the importance of the Sindhi people's ownership of their rivers, Shah declared, "The Sindhi people have rejected the canal projects. If they are built at gunpoint, it will be equivalent to declaring war on 70 million Sindhis." He further criticized the lack of equal representation for provinces in national decisions, stating that decisions should be made with due regard to the population and the interests of all provinces.
Shah concluded his speech by reiterating the commitment of the Save the River Committee to launch a movement similar to the canals campaign, aiming to reclaim the lands taken under corporate farming. "We will not allow even a single acre of Sindh’s land to be given to anyone in the name of corporate farming and green initiatives," he affirmed.
The event was attended by various political and legal figures, including Advocate Israr Chang, KB Leghari, Amir Azad Panhwar, and members of the Sindh United Party. Shah’s statements have added momentum to the ongoing struggle against the canal and corporate farming projects in the province.
