Three Policemen Martyred, Six Injured in Karak Terror Attack

Three police officers were martyred and six others injured when terrorists attacked a checkpost in Karak’s Bahadur Khel area late last night. The attack marks a continuation of escalating violence in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP) and Balochistan amid a renewed wave of terrorist activities.

According to a statement from the KP Police Central Office, the attackers surrounded the checkpost, firing light and heavy weapons in an attempt to seize control. However, the police personnel bravely defended the post, engaging the terrorists in a fierce two-hour encounter. The attackers eventually fled the scene.

District Police Officer (DPO) Shehbaz Elahi confirmed that the injured personnel were transported to Karak District Headquarter Hospital, with three critically injured officers later shifted to Peshawar for advanced medical care.

Honoring the Fallen Heroes
The three martyred officers — identified as Taimur Hayat, Naqeeb, and Adnan — were laid to rest after their funeral prayers were held at the Karak Police Lines this morning. KP Inspector General of Police (IG) Zulfiqar Hameed, Kohat Regional Police Officer Abbas Majeed, Kohat Commissioner Mautasim Balallah, and Karak Deputy Commissioner Shakeel Jan were among the officials who attended the ceremony.

IG Hameed assured the families of the martyred officers that their sacrifices would not go in vain. "Our jawaans fought bravely and thwarted the enemy’s attack. The terrorists were unsuccessful in their cowardly attempt to lay siege to the checkpost," he stated.

He emphasized that the KP police remain resolute in uprooting terrorism and ensuring the safety of the people. "Nothing will prevent us from eradicating this menace," he added, vowing to bring the perpetrators to justice.

The IG also visited the injured personnel at the Karak DHQ Hospital, instructing doctors to provide the best possible care. He later conducted a detailed inspection of the checkpost, analyzing the attack strategy and issuing directives for enhanced security measures.

Government Response and Ongoing Counterterrorism Efforts
Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi condemned the attack, expressing condolences to the bereaved families. "We salute the sacrifice of the martyred officers of the KP police," he said, highlighting the role of KP police as front-line defenders in the war against terrorism.

The incident underscores the growing threat posed by the resurgence of terror activities, particularly in KP and Balochistan. Following the breakdown of a fragile ceasefire between the government and the banned Tehreek-i-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) in 2022, attacks targeting security forces have surged.

Data from the Centre for Research and Security Studies (CRSS) indicates that 2024 was the deadliest year for Pakistan’s civil and military security forces in a decade, with 685 personnel losing their lives in 444 terrorist attacks.

The Pakistan Institute for Conflict and Security Studies (PICSS) further reported a 42% rise in terror incidents in January, prompting intensified counterterrorism operations.

Recent incidents in Karak, including a motorcyclist attack on a police party in Takht-i-Nusrati and a clean-up operation in Banda Daud Shah, highlight the persistent threat in the region.

KP police have vowed to continue their efforts to eliminate terrorist networks and safeguard the people.
