A violent clash between two rival groups over a land dispute in the Bathrait area of Ghizer district, Gilgit-Baltistan, resulted in two deaths and left four others injured, including two women.
According to a press release issued by the Gilgit-Baltistan (GB) police on Friday, the longstanding conflict between the two groups escalated on Thursday when a dispute over the local mosque’s Imamat turned violent.
The confrontation began when Qari Shakeel, a member of one group, allegedly opened fire on Qari Shakir, killing him on the spot. In retaliation, Shakir’s relatives fired back, killing Shakeel’s brother, Sadi.
The violence soon intensified, with gunfire and stone-pelting leading to injuries among bystanders and members of both groups. The injured were identified as Nasbah Khatoon, Saleem, Aabi Hayat, and Bil Jan. They were initially taken to the District Headquarters Hospital in Gahkuch, but three of them, who sustained severe head injuries, were later shifted to Gilgit for specialized medical care.
Police Response and Ongoing Investigation
Following the deadly clash, police launched a crackdown in the area, arresting two suspects from both groups. Law enforcement officials have stated that further raids are being conducted to apprehend the remaining suspects involved in the violence.
Authorities have urged local residents to maintain peace and refrain from escalating the dispute further. Security in the area has been tightened to prevent any further violence.
This tragic incident highlights the deep-rooted land disputes and communal conflicts that continue to pose challenges in remote areas of Gilgit-Baltistan. The police are now investigating the case to determine the legal course of action against those responsible.
