POLITICS & POLICY MAKING
Members of the United States Congress have written a formal letter to Secretary of State Antony Blinken, requesting a detailed update on the imprisonment of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) founder Imran Khan. The letter, written by Chairman of the Pakistan Caucus Tom Swazi and Congressman Jack Bergman, expresses concerns about Khan's confinement in Adiala Jail and the conditions of his imprisonment.
According to a post shared on PTI’s official US account on X (formerly Twitter), the Congress members highlighted various reports regarding Imran Khan’s situation, the protests held by PTI supporters, and his alleged "prisoner isolation." They requested that Secretary Blinken provide a written update on these matters and suggested quarterly reports to ensure transparency on the issue.
Tom Swazi, who became the head of the Pakistan Caucus in the US Congress last month, is expected to visit Pakistan in November. His recent involvement indicates growing attention within the US government regarding Pakistan’s political landscape, particularly concerning the treatment of the PTI leader.
A photograph of the letter was also shared on social media, confirming the requests made to the US Secretary of State. The letter underscores the importance of maintaining oversight on human rights and political freedoms, particularly in light of PTI’s continued protests and Imran Khan’s detention.
This move by US lawmakers has been welcomed by PTI supporters, who have been vocal in demanding international attention on Khan’s imprisonment.
