26 Punjab Opposition Lawmakers Suspended, Reference Sent to ECP

Speaker Malik Ahmed Khan on Saturday suspended 26 opposition members, mostly from the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI), for 15 sessions due to “unruly behavior,” including rioting, sloganeering, and tearing official documents. He also announced that a reference will be sent to the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) against the suspended lawmakers.

The action was taken following disruptions during a recent assembly session, in which opposition members were accused of violating the rules of procedure. The suspended lawmakers include Malik Fahad Masood, Muhammad Tanveer Aslam, Syed Rafat Mahmood, Yasir Mahmood Qureshi, Kaleemullah Khan, Muhammad Ansar Iqbal, and others.

In a press conference, Speaker Malik Ahmed Khan said,

“The sanctity and order of the House will be maintained at all costs. The right to protest is recognized but must remain within constitutional and legal limits. If someone picks up books and throws them at members, it’s my duty to prevent such disorder.”

He emphasized that any member refusing to follow the rules will be barred from attending sessions, reaffirming that the Assembly is not a place for chaos or physical destruction.

Hefty Fines Over Vandalism

Separately, a fine of Rs. 23,550 each was imposed on 10 members who were caught on camera damaging microphones and government property during the session on June 16. The total fine exceeds Rs. 2 million.

Those fined include Javed Kausar, Asad Abbas, Muhammad Tanveer Aslam, Syed Rafat Mahmood, Muhammad Ismail, Shahbaz Ahmed, Imtiaz Mahmood, Khalid Zubair, Rana Aurangzeb, and Muhammad Ahsan.

The notification states that the decision was made based on video evidence, and non-payment within 7 days will lead to further action under assembly rules.

This latest political confrontation reflects deepening tensions between the treasury and opposition benches in Punjab, amid broader instability in Pakistan’s democratic institutions.
