Efforts to Reconcile Imran Khan and Military Establishment Fail, Deepening PTI's Crisis

Despite efforts by a leading religious scholar to reconcile differences between Imran Khan and the military establishment ahead of the February 8 elections, sources indicate the attempt ended in failure. The scholar's name remains undisclosed.

Imran Khan, founder chairman of PTI and currently incarcerated, has been vocal in his criticisms against the army's leadership, including current and former chiefs, following his removal from government in April 2022. These allegations have posed a significant credibility challenge amid his ongoing legal troubles.

Questions arise about Imran Khan's accountability and evidence-based accusations against military officials, given his strategy of both criticism and attempts to engage in dialogue with General Asim Munir and the military leadership under his command.

However, a military spokesperson clarified the army's stance post-February 8 elections, stating unequivocally that there would be no dialogue with PTI unless certain conditions were met. These conditions include an apology to the nation, a commitment to abandon divisive politics, and a shift towards constructive engagement within the political arena.

Since the appointment of the current army chief, PTI's ties within the military have severed, despite efforts during President Arif Alvi's tenure to leverage sympathies among retired generals supportive of Imran Khan.

Analysts within PTI acknowledge that Imran Khan's confrontational stance towards the military establishment has exacerbated the party's challenges rather than yielding favorable outcomes.
