Government to Introduce Counter-Resolution in NA Against US Motion on Democracy in Pakistan

Deputy Prime Minister Ishaq Dar announced today that the government will introduce a resolution in the National Assembly to counter a recently adopted US motion on democracy in Pakistan. This decision comes a day after the US House of Representatives passed a resolution expressing robust support for democracy and human rights in Pakistan by an overwhelming 368-7 vote.

The US resolution, HR 901, titled ‘Expressing support for democracy and human rights in Pakistan’, highlights the United States' commitment to promoting democratic values globally. It urges President Joe Biden to collaborate with Pakistan in upholding democracy, human rights, and the rule of law. It also emphasizes the importance of free and fair elections, calling for thorough and independent investigations into any claims of interference or irregularities in Pakistan’s 2024 elections.

However, the Foreign Office (FO) responded swiftly, stating that the resolution stemmed from an “incomplete understanding” of Pakistan’s political situation and electoral process. The FO stressed that the timing and context of this resolution do not align with the positive dynamics of bilateral ties and called for constructive dialogue based on mutual respect.

In today’s National Assembly session, Deputy PM Dar, who is also the Foreign Minister, reiterated the FO’s response. He announced the government’s plan to “bring a resolution to counter this (US) resolution” with Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif’s permission.

“We must show our sovereignty, we must show our unity, we must show that we mean business,” Dar asserted in a passionate speech. He emphasized the need for a united front in response to the US resolution, indicating that a draft resolution was ready and would be shared with both treasury and opposition benches.

Dar also addressed the issue of overseas Pakistanis' voting rights, calling for a Constitutional amendment to ensure their participation in the electoral process. He urged lawmakers to come together and bring a resolution that reflects the voice of overseas Pakistanis.

The proposed resolution will be tabled after the debate on the 2024-25 budget concludes, marking a significant step in asserting Pakistan’s sovereignty and responding to international motions with a united stance.
