KP CM Sohail Afridi Signals Engagement with Establishment, Urges Dialogue

Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Chief Minister Sohail Afridi on Saturday said he was ready to hold discussions with the establishment on provincial matters and work towards improving relations in the larger public interest.

Talking to journalists in Peshawar, the chief minister clarified that Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) founder Imran Khan had not directly instructed him to engage in talks with the establishment. He said that Imran Khan had instead assigned the task of dialogue to senior politicians Mahmood Achakzai and Allama Nasir Abbas.

Sohail Afridi said he personally believed that dialogue on provincial issues was essential, adding that the government, establishment and all stakeholders should formulate policies keeping public interests at the centre.

Responding to a question, the chief minister said that if any official event or meeting took place, he would certainly meet Field Marshal Asim Munir.

He emphasized that the supremacy of the constitution and the rule of law must prevail in the country, adding that any dialogue process regarding the release of Imran Khan should take place in a conducive and favourable environment.

Commenting on political activities by Imran Khan’s family, Sohail Afridi said it was permissible for the PTI founder’s sisters to come out and campaign. “They are trying for the release of their brother,” he said, adding that their visit to Karachi was aimed at mobilising people for Imran Khan’s release.

The chief minister also addressed controversy surrounding his recent remarks in Lahore, admitting that he had used inappropriate language. He said it was a reaction to the situation at the time and confirmed that he had apologised for his choice of words during the Lahore visit.

His statements come amid renewed debate over political dialogue, civil-military relations, and the future course of PTI amid ongoing legal and political challenges.
