The Lahore High Court has taken action by suspending a notification that declared Pakistan Muslim League Nawaz (PML-N) leader Azhar Qayyum as the winner in Gunjranwala’s NA-81 constituency following a recount.
Justice Shahid Karim made the decision in response to a petition filed by Sunni Ittehad Council (SIC) leader Bilal Ijaz Chaudhry. Chaudhry contested the recount results, claiming that he had initially won his seat by a margin of over 8,000 votes. However, the recount reduced his votes by 2,500, resulting in Qayyum being declared the winner.
The Lahore High Court has suspended the notification pending the resolution of Chaudhry's petition, effectively putting the outcome of the election in NA-81 on hold.
Furthermore, the SIC, consisting of candidates who contested the elections as independents but are aligned with the ruling Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) party, has alleged that several of its seats were lost as a result of recounting. This situation has added to the ongoing legal and political tensions surrounding the election results.
