New York Enhances Security for T20 Cricket World Cup Amid Threats to India-Pakistan Match

New York is set to enhance security measures for the T20 Cricket World Cup scheduled for June, Governor Kathy Hochul announced on Wednesday. This decision comes amid reports of potential threats, particularly concerning the high-stakes India-Pakistan match.

Governor Hochul stated that her team is collaborating with federal and local law enforcement to ensure the safety of attendees, noting that there is currently no credible threat. However, a New York City Police Department bulletin highlighted concerns that extremists might view the tournament as an opportunity for violence, especially after recent pro-ISIS propaganda mentioned the India-Pakistan match.

Nassau County Police Commissioner Patrick Ryder revealed that threats had been received, including from the Islamic State's Khorasan chapter (IS-K), which specifically targeted the India-Pakistan contest. As a result, New York State Police will increase their enforcement presence, surveillance, and screening processes during the event.

The ninth T20 World Cup will take place from June 1-29 across nine stadiums in the West Indies and the United States. The highly anticipated India-Pakistan match is scheduled for June 9 at Eisenhower Park stadium in Nassau County, New York.
