Pakistan to Participate in Doha Talks on Afghanistan This Week

Pakistan has decided to participate in the upcoming talks on Afghanistan to be held in Qatar this week. According to diplomatic sources, Special Representative for Afghanistan Asif Durrani and Assistant Secretary for West Asia in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs Ahmad Naseem Waraich will represent Pakistan in the Doha talks.
The Pakistani delegation, led by Durrani and Waraich, is expected to visit Doha in the coming days. The United Nations will host the third two-day Doha talks, commencing on June 30, with the Afghan interim government set to participate regularly this year.
Sources revealed that the Afghan Taliban interim government had previously boycotted the second Doha talks due to the inclusion of Afghan women and civil society representatives. This time, special representatives on Afghanistan from around the world will engage directly with the Afghan Taliban.
In preparation for the talks, the United Nations is consulting with Afghan civil society representatives both inside and outside Afghanistan. Following the main sessions, these representatives will meet with the special representatives on Afghanistan on July 2.
Despite the extensive discussions and international engagement, diplomatic sources indicate that significant progress on recognizing the interim government of the Afghan Taliban is unlikely during these talks.
The participation of Pakistan underscores its ongoing commitment to contributing to the peace process in Afghanistan and highlights the complex geopolitical dynamics at play in the region.
