Privatization of Islamabad Airport Prioritized, Open Bidding Planned

The Ministry of Privatization has declared the privatization of Islamabad Airport a top priority, following the privatization of Pakistan International Airlines (PIA), according to the Secretary of the Ministry.

During a briefing to the Senate Standing Committee, the Secretary said that countries including Saudi Arabia, the UAE, and Turkey have expressed interest in the Islamabad Airport project. Unlike previous government-managed deals, the airport will be privatized through an open bidding process, with management awarded to the highest bidder.

“After Islamabad, Karachi and Lahore airports will also be outsourced,” the Secretary added, noting that a financial advisor is being appointed to oversee the privatization of Islamabad Airport.

The Secretary further stated that the Asian Development Bank (ADB) has shown interest in assisting Pakistan with airport privatization. Following the outsourcing of the three major airports, plans are in place to redeploy current staff to smaller airports across the country.

The move is part of a broader effort to enhance efficiency, attract foreign investment, and improve the management of Pakistan’s key aviation infrastructure.
