POLITICS & POLICY MAKING
Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) Chairman Barrister Gohar Ali Khan and Federal Information Minister Attaullah Tarar on Monday strongly condemned the incident of harassment faced by senior journalist and Geo News anchorperson Shahzeb Khanzada while he was abroad with his wife.
Speaking to Geo News, Barrister Gohar termed the incident “regrettable and deeply unfortunate,” stressing that no journalist should be subjected to intimidation—especially when accompanied by family. He added that such behaviour reflects a growing and alarming trend of harassment aimed at media professionals.
Gohar said, “It is very unfortunate that Shahzeb Khanzada was harassed when he was abroad with his wife. Such actions must be condemned at every level.”
Meanwhile, Federal Information Minister Atta Tarar also denounced the incident in a post on X (formerly Twitter). Tarar criticised those who publicise journalists' personal details online, inciting violence and creating a climate of fear.
He wrote, “Those who write the names and addresses of journalists and their children and post them on social media, telling others to kill them — just like Muzammil Sahib was threatened — must be held accountable. What happened to Shahzeb Khanzada is highly condemnable.”
The minister further assured that the state would investigate the matter and identify the individual involved, saying, “It cannot be that someone is with their family and is being harassed. We will trace who that man was.”
The incident occurred when Shahzeb Khanzada, host of Aaj Shahzeb Khanzada Kay Saath, and his wife were confronted by an unidentified man in a shopping mall abroad. According to reports, the journalist and his wife chose not to engage with the individual and maintained complete restraint despite provocation.
The incident has sparked widespread condemnation from journalists, civil society, and political leaders who view it as part of an escalating pattern of threats faced by media personnel both online and abroad.
Authorities have yet to share details about the suspect or the progress of the inquiry.
